PLAYA BLANCA
Once a small fishing village situated at the most southerly tip of Lanzarote, Playa Blanca has developed into one of Lanzarote's main resorts. Playa Blanca started late in the development race, and this has been a distinct advantage. Although it is now catching up quickly, it has had the benefit of seeing what mass tourism can do in some circumstances. The Yaiza council has put the knowledge which it has gained to good use - the emphasis is on providing high quality tourist facilities in a beautiful environment.
The many bars and pavement restaurants provide plenty of places
to stop and watch the world slowly pass you by. On offer
is a tempting range of
international cuisine as well as traditional Canarian dishes. Playa Blanca is
also a shoppers paradise with many perfumeries and electrical shops selling
items at below duty free prices.
Recent developments in Playa Blanca have included:
The construction of the longest promenade walk in Europe - You
could easily spend a couple of hours strolling along it enjoying the magnificent views
across to Fuerteventura.
Rubicon Marina - A beautifully designed marina with a number of high quality shops, bars and restaurants as well as a diving school and sailing school. The buildings have been designed in a traditional Spanish village style with cobbled streets and wooden decking. This is a beautiful spot to sit with a drink and watch the sun go down.
Playa Blanca also features a number of sandy beaches. The white
beach in the very centre of town, from which Playa Blanca gets it's name, has
been awarded a European 'blue flag' - a tribute to it's cleanliness. Playa
Flamingo, a few minutes walk to the west, is a very attractive and safe beach
suitable for families with its surrounding breakwaters providing a calm sea.
Playa Dorado, a few minutes walk in the opposite direction - again awarded a
'blue flag', provides yet another excellent beach.
For those who like to wander a
little further, there are the Papagayo beaches - half a dozen beautiful white
sandy bays, sheltered between rocky headlands.
Many regard the beaches of Papagayo as some of the best in the whole of Spain
and the Spanish islands.
Climate: Lanzarote has a great climate throughout the year, although the sea breeze can be quite bracing. The average temperature is comfortable all year round, rarely dropping below 63˚F (17˚C) and more often above 82˚F (28˚C) during the day. During winter it gets cool in the evenings and the sea temperature drops. Rainfall in the summer months is almost non-existent, but showers are likely between October and April.
